It just struck me that Trump sounds more and more like Kurtz as hallucinated by Dennis Hopper’s tripped-out photojournalist in Apocalypse Now:

The president then referred to the Canada-United States border as an “artificial line,” adding that “it looks like it was done with a ruler.”

“When you take away that and you look at that beautiful formation of Canada and the United States,” he continued, “there is no place anywhere in the world that looks like that, then if you add Greenland, that’s even…”

Remember back when Cory Robin and other Savvy Observers pointed out that Trump wasn’t really a fascist because his rhetoric didn’t perfectly sync up with the last three words of Robert Paxton’s classic definition?

Fascism may be defined as a form of political behavior marked by obsessive preoccupation with community decline, humiliation, or victim-hood and by compensatory cults of unity, energy, and purity, in which a mass-based party of committed nationalist militants, working in uneasy but effective collaboration with traditional elites, abandons democratic liberties and pursues with redemptive violence and without ethical or legal restraints goals of internal cleansing and external expansion.

Yeah.

The man is clear in his mind, but his soul is mad.
