This is a semi-open thread dedicated to discussing all things election-related.
A few random comments to get things rolling:
(1) We’re already into anticipatory recrimination season, with several pieces out there about who will get blamed if Harris loses. I don’t want to shock anybody but centrist Democrats say progressives will be to blame, and progressives say just the opposite.
My view is that Harris has run very close to a flawless campaign — I mean a literally flawless campaign is impossible, and I think she’s come as close as anybody can. Basically she’s been Gerrit Cole through the first four innings yesterday, and then Joe Biden failed to cover first base. Yes the “controversy” over Biden’s remarks is typical crypto-right wing legacy media bullshit, but those are the rules of this extremely crooked game, and Biden stepped all over Harris’s closing message reaching out to swing voters/wavering Republicans. Also if you watch the relevant clip and still think that Biden could have successfully carried out this campaign I’ve got some Donald Trump-backed crypto to sell you.
(2) I will never stop being amazed at how the rules of that game somehow don’t apply to Trump. This goes way beyond the elite media being wired for Republicans. Imagine Mitt Romney, for example, doing that McDonald’s fry cook stunt. The media mockery would have been at Dukakis in the tank levels. Yesterday Trump, inheritor of $400 million, literally drove a garbage truck around a parking lot in circles, then did a little speech afterwards in which I swear to every deity actual and theoretical he looked as if he was wearing blackface his makeup was so bad. It’s just unreal.
(3) Speaking of sports this week is like the week before the biggest game your favorite team team has ever played is finally going to happen, except it’s not a game, and the outcome isn’t bragging rights, it’s democracy.
