Big Business Snubs Trump

Not a single chief executive of a Fortune 100 company supports Donald Trump, Jeffrey A. Sonnenfeld, president of the Yale Chief Executive Leadership Institute tells us in a New York Times op-ed. The Times political news unit and Axios enlarge upon that statistic.

Business leaders have been cautious in their public support for Biden because, after all, Trump might win. Felix Salmon and Josh Marshall point out that supporting Trump is similar to Pascal’s wager: If Trump wins, supporters of Biden are in for a pile of hurt, but Biden doesn’t plan a purge of Trump supporters.

Still, business is not coming out strong for Trump.

If one takes Trump’s words as representing a policy agenda, tax cuts and deportation of a large part of the work force pretty obviously lead to inflation. Sixteen Nobel laureate economists have now warned about that.

On Bluesky, hilzoy has made an argument that may be part of the business leaders’ calculations: business can only prosper in a country of laws. Trump promises lawlessness. But business leaders are unlikely to say that.
