Johnson is the old Alito

As longtime readers will know, I owe my very small patch of internets fame to The American Prospect finding my posts explaining that the general tenor of mainstream media coverage of Sam Altio’s nomination — i.e. that liberals had really dodged a bullet getting a relative moderate instead of another Scalia — was either dishonest or ridiculously misinformed, I know that this seems even crazier now, when Alito writes like a Daily Caller blogger and speaks like a regional MAGA talk radio host. But the 2005 Alito was very good at ensuring that his always reactionary opinions avoided any quotable or inflammatory language, so you actually had to do some homework to figure out that Alito would be significantly worse (from a liberal perspective) than Scalia.

As Alito was to Scalia in 2005, so is Mike Johnson to Gym Jordan in 2023:

Here’s who he is:

Paul Ryan’s economic policies + Mike Pence’s views on abortion + Donald Trump’s dangerously wacky views on the 2020 election = Mike Johnson.

In other words, if Democrats could design in a lab the perfect candidate to run against, that person would look a lot like Mike Johnson.

It’s tempting to laugh at the absurd process that led to this heretofore anonymous Congressman winning the Speakership. However, Johnson is not only the leader of the rowdy Republicans; he is second in line to the Presidency, the most powerful individual in a co-equal branch of government during a time of domestic turmoil and international crises on multiple fronts.

Needless to say, NO LABELS has bought 12 units Mountainview:

Members associated with No Labels, the centrist political organization plotting a third-party presidential bid, are singing the praises of newly minted House Speaker Mike Johnson — casting him as, at least temperamentally, a moderate.

“He’s a Reagan Republican, not a Trump Republican,” said Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.) in a Zoom call organized by No Labels and attended by a few hundred of the group’s supporters. Fitzpatrick is part of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus that is backed by No Labels.

To these assholes and the pundits who think like them, the only Trump Republican is Donald Trump and maybe a few tokens like Lauren Boebert, and if the choice comes down to Biden or Trump Donald Trump will lose his status as a Trump Republican too, because how else can “Never Trumpers” justify supporting him?
