A few thoughts on an early Seoul evening…

  • This is an extremely large city. I have spent a lot of time in New York, but Seoul is certainly the largest city I’ve ever visited. It’s also extremely new.
  • Everyone masks indoors, and nearly everyone masks outdoors. I would say nine out of ten pedestrians wear masks; I wonder whether this would be different in the summer.
  • More mountains than I expected.
  • After 27 hours of being awake (I absolutely did not think I had it in me to manage that) I made it to my room around 8pm and immediately went to bed. I gave some thought to venturing out at 4am to watch the Brazil-South Korea match, but fortunately thought better of it. I understand that there were many sad, drunk people wandering the city at 6am.
  • I spent part of the day doing work in my hotel room with Korean daytime television in the background. At one point I believe I was watching a weight loss informercial which featured numerous significantly overweight Americans eating cheeseburgers. If you can’t be a City on a Hill, try to at least be a Cautionary Tale.
  • Tomorrow will be museums and palaces and perhaps a local brewpub. On the next day I plan to visit the DMZ in an effort to deter Kim Jong Un.
  • I suppose that one can get used to soju.

More later. Pretty sure this whole thing will be over by Christmas.
