Toleration today, toleration tomorrow, toleration forever
This is a thing that Greg Abbott said:
“What happened in Uvalde is a horrific tragedy that cannot be tolerated in the state of Texas,” Mr. Abbott, a Republican, said.
Oh, I’m quite confident it can and will be tolerated! I mean, tolerated, shit, how about actively and willfully facilitated? There’s no mystery about how to reduce gun violence — the US is a huge outlier among similar liberal democracies — there’s just one political party in America strongly committed to making the problem worse rather than better, and Abbott exemplifies its position on this issue. It’s hard to imagine these words coming out of his mouth except that nobody with any moral compass or shame could possibly occupy Abbott’s current position.
Oh, and for those jurisdictions that are willing to take at least modest measures to control the flood of firearms, the Star Chamber is about to make things worse for you too:
The Supreme Court’s conservative supermajority is about to dramatically expand the scope of the Second Amendment and prohibit us from protecting our communities by enacting gun safety laws through the democratic process.— Mark Joseph Stern (@mjs_DC) May 24, 2022
…tolerance? How about outright celebration:
Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas, along with Donald Trump and Senator Ted Cruz, is scheduled to speak at the NRA's annual meeting in Houston on Friday, three days after the mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas, that has left at least 14 children and one teacher dead. https://t.co/S8q5cDzfkJ— The New York Times (@nytimes) May 24, 2022
