I showed this 1912 film in my Civil War class today. It’s a very normal Civil War film on the time, which means that it completely erases anything about slavery, it tells a story of a romantic war dominated by chivalry, and it has a ridiculous reconciliationist ending that brings both sides back together in a hazy nostalgia about the kind of behavior that whites should have with one another. In conclusion, it’s pretty gross.
