I was happy to interview Peter Eisenstadt, Associate Editor of the Howard Thurman Papers and sometimes member of the LGM commenter community, about his new biography of Thurman, titled Against the Hounds of Hell: A Life of Howard Thurman, and published by the University of Virginia Press. You may not know who Thurman is, but he was one of the most important and influential figures in 20th century religious history, a man who met Gandhi and brought back his ideas to the United States, was a heavy influence on Martin Luther King and other civil rights leaders, and one of the smartest people in American history.
