What is the political upside to ignoring the huge sums of money spent on direct relief to the unemployed? On nutrition programs? On schools and transit agencies? Who does this rhetoric help?

The CARES Act was a huge achievement, radical in the context of the history of the American welfare state. The hard-won expanded UI benefit, in particular, was a huge progressive achievement, causing poverty rates to decline during a historic pandemic. For Tlaib to go along with the dumbest segments of affluent lefty Twitter in making CHECKS the sole relevant relief issue is really disturbing. Not only is it dishonest, and bad politics, it’s counterproductive as coalition politics. What incentive to moderates have to go along with your asks if you’re going to ignore or outright attack the results when you get “yes” for an answer? It’s bizarre.
