Ben Wittes is back to share his wisdom about the unshakeable integrity of American political institutions
Yeah, Ben Wittes. The guy who told us not to get our pretty little heads into a tizzy about Elite Lawyer of Integritude Bill Barr, when Barr became AG. The guy who told us that Brett Kavanaugh was also just a very fine and terrific fellow when he was nominated to the SCOTUS:
There are a lot of good reasons for liberals to oppose Kavanaugh. He’s a genuine conservative who will do a lot of the things liberals are afraid of. One of the reasons to oppose him is not that he’s some kind of terrible person. He’s a thoroughly decent and honorable person.— Benjamin Wittes (@benjaminwittes) September 8, 2018
Another good reason to oppose him is not that he’s a liar. He’s not. Full stop. There’s no need to demonize one’s opponents. And there’s no need to gin up a “perjury” issue here.— Benjamin Wittes (@benjaminwittes) September 8, 2018
Now he’s back — to tell us we’re being ridiculous if we think Donald Trump and the Republican party could ever breach the adamantine wall that is THE CONSTITUTION:
To everyone flipping out on Twitter right now. Stop. Breath. And let’s go over what’s going to happen. Tomorrow, the electoral result in Georgia will be certified. Monday, the results in Michigan and Pennsylvania will be certified.— Benjamin Wittes (@benjaminwittes) November 20, 2020
There are very few perfect designs for governance, but the Constitution’s approach to ensuring a president cannot remain in power in the face of the expressed will of the electorate is awesome in its automaticity and resistance to presidential interference.— Benjamin Wittes (@benjaminwittes) November 20, 2020
There are many problems with our presidential election system. It’s deftness in getting rid of a president who lost is not one of them. He is the most powerful man in the world. He can literally destroy the world with a few words. But he is helpless to remain in power.— Benjamin Wittes (@benjaminwittes) November 20, 2020
Just a little constitutional civics to brighten your Thursday.— Benjamin Wittes (@benjaminwittes) November 20, 2020
You know, if I had been as catastrophically wrong as Wittes was about Barr and Kavanaugh, specifically because I was such a zealous institutionalist that I couldn’t even imagine that these people would wreak the havoc they’ve already wreaked in the service of Donald Trump, I’d like to think that I’d show just the tiniest bit of humility before lecturing people about our MAGICAL CONSTITUTION, that has proven so successful in repulsing the previous (checks notes) zero attempts by sitting presidents to subvert it in this particular way, before Donald Trump came along.
But I guess that’s just one reason I’m not a Very Serious Person.
