The early voting stats from Texas are pretty mind-blowing. As of yesterday, 4.7 million Texans had already cast early votes, even though by law it’s very difficult to vote by mail there, plus Greg Abbot decided that one ballot receptacle the size of a box of Lucky Charms should be good enough for the 4.7 million people in Harris County.

How does this compare to the same period four years ago? This state government website says that 576,000 people had voted early as of October 24th in Texas counties that collectively accounted for two-thirds of the state’s 15 million registered voters at the time, so the back of my envelope suggests that early voting is up roughly 400% in the Lone Star state year over year.

Texas doesn’t record the party affiliation of people who vote early, but in states who do Democrats are currently outvoting Republicans more than two to one.

Nationally more than three million early votes were recorded in the last 12 hours, and nearly 25 million votes have been cast in just the last week.

As a matter of basic fairness, I encourage LGMers to remind all Republicans who think that voting early is cheating to be sure to get to the polls on November 4th, so that we can still have a Republic instead of Democracy, even with all the womenfolk canceling out their husbands’ rightful headship etc etc.
