This is a fascinating scandal. “Cooperating Witness 1” describes a scheme which involves creating what he calls a “side door” to college admissions at hyper and semi elite colleges. The front door is getting on your credentials. The back door is having Mommy and Daddy buy your admission, via giving a pile of cash to the institution. (Hi Jared).
The problems with the back door are:
(1) It’s not technically a bribe, so it can’t be structured as what Boss Tweed called “honest graft.” In other words there’s no way to guarantee in advance you’ll get what you’re paying for.
(2) The whole world knows you bought little Jared’s admission ticket.
The “side door” gets rid of these inconveniences.
