On Saturday, ICE arrested Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian activist who led demonstrations on the Columbia University campus. He is a graduate student at Columbia, and the holder of a green card. The ICE agents said they were acting on State Department orders to revoke Khalil’s student visa.

His wife and attorney have been unable to find him, but he may be in a Louisiana detention facility. Bluesky is the best place I have found to follow what is happening. This is the first of many, Donald Trump says. The basis for Khalil’s detention and threatened deportation lacks due process and is being contested.

No matter what you think of the Israel/Palestine situation, and no matter what you think of the Columbia Univ. protests:If ICE can grab a permanent resident, suddenly revoke their Green Card (!) and whisk them away to a distant prison incommunicado, no one’s liberties are really safe.— Derek Lowe (@dereklowe.bsky.social) 2025-03-10T18:57:56.601Z

NYC friends: I think this one’s worth it, even if you’re not much of a protester. The case seems very specific & individual, I know. But Trump’s seizure of this lawful resident—& celebration of it, w/ promise of more arrests to come—may well be a rubicon.— Jeff Sharlet (@jeffsharlet.bsky.social) 2025-03-10T19:01:21.177Z

Every lawmaker needs to go on record: Do you support using immigration status as a weapon against political dissent?Green card holders have due process rights—the president can’t just strip someone’s status bc they don’t like what they say. This is unconstitutional & authoritarian, full stop.— Senator Megan Hunt (@meganhunt.bsky.social) 2025-03-10T03:33:32.073Z

Trump threatens Mahmoud Khalil's arrest will be the first "of many to come," in TruthSocial post on Monday afternoon.— Josh Russell (@jrussjruss.bsky.social) 2025-03-10T17:45:30.075Z

BREAKING: Judge Furman issues an order in Mahmoud Khalil's habeas petition filed in federal court in Manhattan: "To preserve the Court’s jurisdiction pending a ruling on the petition, Petitioner shall not be removed from the United States unless and until the Court orders otherwise." More to come:— Chris Geidner (@chrisgeidner.bsky.social) 2025-03-10T21:27:04.670Z

NEW: Mahmoud Khalil's motion to force ICE to return him to New York: "His very arrest and detention were in retaliation for Mr. Khalil’s constitutionally protected advocacy on behalf of Palestinian human rights." www.documentcloud.org/documents/25…— Joshua J.
