JD Vance transcends the Alanis definition of “irony” and achieves pure own-goal status:

Most money for US aid to Ukraine went to US manufacturers. It is literally American industry, and part of the funding was for expanding US industrial capacity. It's next level lying. Lies wrapped in lies, stacked in a pile of BS. Reality inverting lies. Piss-on-my-leg-and-tell-me-it's-raining lying.

Yes, the US mostly sent Ukraine older equipment the Pentagon had wanted to replace, then paid US manufactures for new, more advanced equipment. Rarely does foreign policy deliver such a good cost-benefit ratio. That's why, to oppose this moral and strategic move, Trump-Vance-Musk-MAGA have to lie.

A US-partnered democracy using weapons the US built to stop the Russian military to fight off Russian invasion is, in fact, the Vance objection. He wants Russian aggression to succeed. But he knows that sounds bad—in this environment, that’s really saying something—so he lies. Lying is all he’s got.

It’s a bitter irony that reactionaries who make gestures about wanting to restore the American manufacturing base are falsely claiming that the minor outlays required to fund Ukraine’s self defense are unsustainable because it’s more important for them for Daddy Putin’s imperialist ambitions to succeed. It’s almost as if they don’t care about the material well-being of their non-wealthy constituents at all.
