Why would you buy a Tesla when you could just give money to the Nazi Party directly?

Jonathan Last has a good thread on the tanking of Tesla sales that Erik discussed recently:
If you want to hurt Trump, you hurt Musk. If you want to hurt Musk, you hurt Tesla. About 1/3 of Musk's wealth is tied up in TSLA stock, meaning that the stock price is an attack surface . . . 1/ www.thebulwark.com/p/tesla-is-e…

The good news: Tesla is already one of the most toxic brands on the planet. How bad is it? Musk has alienated the people most likely to buy EVs while currying favor with truck-driving men who have no intention of buying an EV. 2/

You can already see the effects in Tesla sales. 3/ * CA: -11.6% * Germany: -60% * France: -63% * UK: -8% * China: -11%— Jonathan V. Last (@jvl.bsky.social) February 10, 2025 at 9:34 AM
But if you want to know just how bad things are for the brand, remember this: Depreciation reveals *everything*. It tells you exactly what consumers think about a product. Where does Tesla sit on depreciation? DFL. Below *Jaguar.* 4/

If you look at the depreciation charts for non-luxury vehicles, Tesla's 50.44% resale value would ALSO be DFL. Behind [shudder] Chrysler. 6/

Elon’s becoming Trump’s Goring, to state the obvious, is alienating to the vast majority of consumers who would ever consider being a Tesla, and it should be. At this point buying a Tesla should be treated like driving around with a swastika on your car.
And this doesn’t mean giving up on electric cars, either — the Ioniq 6, the Kia Niro, the Kona, the BMW i4/i5, the Taycan, the Ariya, the Mustang — all comparable or better than the Tesla competition and with the bonus that their re-sale value won’t be cratered by their brand CEO’s attempting a fascist takeover of the government. It couldn’t be an easier boycott.
