To the extent Trump believes that it doesn’t really matter how much worse he makes things for his base materially they will keep supporting them as long as he keeps bullying the people they also hate, he’s probably right. But it’s still wild that the overwhelming narrative is that it’s Democrats who are contemptuous of rural Americans and indifferent to their material interests.
