Special Elections

It’s rare to have any good news at all. But if we are wanting some, plus if we are wanting to have a sense of how we are doing as left of center folks going forward, special elections are the way to go. And this one in the Iowa senate is a very good one.

Iowa Democrats have flipped a state Senate seat vacated earlier this year by Chris Cournoyer, who resigned to become the state’s new lieutenant governor.

Democrat Mike Zimmer has defeated Republican Kate Whittington in the special election for Senate District 35.

According to unofficial results from the Iowa Secretary of State’s website, Zimmer won with 52% of the vote to Whittington’s 48%.

Flips are good. But this one? This one is real good. Trump won the district by 21 points in November. This is also a big sprawling district in northeastern Iowa, totally rural. This is an area Democrats once did quite well in and then Iowa went insane.

Now, this doesn’t per se mean that much. But you’d rather see this than not see it.
