We can now add the immortal Bailey Zappe at #34 at 0-1.
In 2020, Baker Mayfield had 6.96 A Y/A and a 26-8 TD-INT ratio. DeShaun Watson had 8.22 Y/A and a 33-7 TD-INT ratio. Both were good, the latter was better, although when you consider that Mayfield did that in for an 11-5 team that won a playoff game on the road in a strong division and Watson piled up a lot of empty calorie garbage time stats for a 4-12 team in a weak division, the gap is less than the raw stats would indicat. In 2021, however, Mayfield played most of the year with an injured shoulder and had a poor year, while Watson spend the year inactive because he was subjected to lawsuits for being a serial sexual harasser. So what did the Browns take advantage of the off year to sign Mayfield to a team favorable contract and hope he rebounded? No, of course they traded Mayfield for a $5 Kenny Rogers Roasters gift card and then traded inter alia 3 first rounders for the right to sign the sex pest to a $230 million guaranteed contract. The shady truck stop aristocats!
Without games started by Jameis Winston, the Browns would have offensive DVOA of -44.7% which would be the worst since 1978. With the Winston games, they were at -30.9% going into today which is 13th worst since 1978.— Aaron Schatz (@aschatz.bsky.social) January 4, 2025 at 2:50 PM
Speaking of awful asset management by astoundingly badly run organizations, this year Sam Darnold ranks third in the league in AY/A and Baker 8th, The Panthers had both of them before letting them walk.
