Look I get it: world-weary cynicism is the official emotion of the political internet, and I’ve indulged myself on an occasion or three.

But the fact that we’re in uncharted territory here — that Trump is way more out of control, more openly lawless, than any other previous president, including himself — also means that we have no real idea how this is going to play out, because we don’t have any good precedents from which to extrapolate.

In the Caroline Kennedy thread, for instance, there’s a lot of too cool for school posturing about why do you think murdering baby chicks and mice in a blender would make any difference, don’t you realize the Republicans in the Senate will vote for any Trump nominee no matter what blah blah blah. This ignores that Matt Gaetz already got shot down, and Rapey McDrunkard needed the Oxy Whisperer’s tiebreaking vote to get through.

Similarly, claims that the SCOTUS will just let Trump get away with anything are just cynical despair, and I say this as someone who could not possibly have a lower opinion of that institution. And cynical despair is the exact opposite of the frame of mind needed for any kind of political opposition.

This isn’t Nazi Germany or Stalinist Russia: The very fact that I’m typing these words now proves aaaaaaaahhhhhh!
