All the living U.S. presidents sat near each other during former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral at Washington National Cathedral, including President-elect Donald Trump, who was spotted laughing and chatting with former President Barack Obama.

The Democrat and Republican, who have a history of sparring on partisan issues, engaged in conversation for several minutes. Obama sat next to Trump, who did not stand to greet him but shook hands.

The message from top Democrats since the election has been unambiguous: All that stuff about how this fascist insurrectionist was a threat to the Republic? Well that was a bunch of campaign rhetoric, and you know how much exaggeration there can be when the elbows are being thrown in the midst of a heated race.

And btw please send us some more money, so we’ll do better next time.

FWIW, which is next to nothing since he declined to endorse Harris, Dubya pointedly refused to shake Trump’s hand.

I have a visceral dislike of these sorts of quasi-royalist state funerals, as they seem atavistic in a way that reflects the essentially anti-egalitarian character of presidential systems. In addition, the thought that one day, hopefully very soon, Donald Trump’s decaying corpse will be the centerpiece of a particularly garish installment of all this pharaonic nonsense is a powerful emetic.
