The stupidity is starting to get to me
Stocks are up this morning, after the president-elect promised last night to start a major trade war with all America’s top trading partners.
The standard explanation for anything like this in Trumplandia is always the same: Trump isn’t really going to end up doing any of this stuff. That’s because he’s just a master negotiator, who starts by taking a maximal position that he has no intention of actually sticking with, in order to win a much smaller concession eventually.
It’s the Art of the Deal you see, which is why it makes sense to put a “great businessman” in the presidency, so that we can win these negotiations with all these foreigners, who can be pressured into making concessions, because they’re afraid that Trump will do what he says he’s going to do.
The belief structure here is that Trump is very obviously bluffing in order to win a negotiation. By very obviously bluffing.
The Market (blessed be its name) apparently has no issue with this brilliant negotiating strategy.
I mean at some point, and that point is now, one (and by one I mean me) becomes very tired of trying to make sense of anything any more.
