The problem(s) with young men

What’s going on here? One of my students was explaining to me this morning that so many of his friends spend hours and hours listening to Joe Rogan podcasts. These of course are people who you can’t get to read a ten-page article, let alone an actual book, but they will listen to a three-hour Rogan podcast while at work, on a plane, etc.

I have a colleague, a psychology professor, who is in despair about so many of her male undergraduates because they apparently do little but watch video games and porn, and have astonishingly retrograde attitudes toward their female classmates. (This kind of thing expresses itself most radically in the context of incel ideology, but there are a lot of way stations on the road to Elliot Rodger.)

I realize anecdotes are not data, but Houston (and Detroit, and Pittsburgh PA) we have a problem.
