I was aware that Walker Buehler had declined because of injuries, but until I saw it discussed in Joe Sheehan’s newsletter, I had no idea how bad he had been this year — 5.38 ERA, 5.54 FIP, -0.2 fWAR. He threw 4 shoutout innings against the Mets but as anyone who watched that game knows he had pretty much nothing and kept getting bailed out by an undisciplined Mets lineup. But Game 3 of the World Series he goes into Yankee Stadium and pitches 5 shutout innings giving up only 2 hits — this one was legit. You Never Know! Anyway if the Yankees didn’t win the battle of starting pitching they were screwed because the Dodgers are better at everything else.
The other question is whether Aaron Judge is finally going to have a big game — it’s hard to win a series with a stars-and-scrubs lineup when your biggest star is slugging less than .100.
