Trump refuses to do another debate

Former President Donald J. Trump declared on his social media site on Thursday that he would not debate Vice President Kamala Harris again, as her campaign said it took in $47 million in donations in the 24 hours after they met for the first time.
Mr. Trump, who has insisted that he won Tuesday night’s debate while his aides have privately acknowledged he had a rough outing, wrote on his Truth Social site that there “will be no” second debate with Ms. Harris. Minutes later, the vice president told rallygoers in Charlotte, N.C., that she and Mr. Trump “owe it to voters” to square off again.
The surge in financial support for Ms. Harris — her biggest one-day total since an initial burst of donations when she replaced President Biden atop the Democratic ticket in July — was likely to widen the funding gap between the two candidates as they began an intense run of campaigning in battleground states. Ms. Harris will hold a second rally on Thursday in Greensboro, N.C.,
Mr. Trump is speaking in Tucson, Ariz., at a venue named for the singer Linda Ronstadt, who denounced him hours before his rally.

Donald Trump is holding a rally on Thursday in a rented hall in my hometown, Tucson. I would prefer to ignore that sad fact. But since the building has my name on it, I need to say something.
It saddens me to see the former President bring his hate show to Tucson, a town with deep Mexican-American roots and a joyful, tolerant spirit.
I don’t just deplore his toxic politics, his hatred of women, immigrants and people of color, his criminality, dishonesty and ignorance — although there’s that.
For me it comes down to this: In Nogales and across the southern border, the Trump Administration systematically ripped apart migrant families seeking asylum. Family separation made orphans of thousands of little children and babies, and brutalized their desperate mothers and fathers. It remains a humanitarian catastrophe that Physicians for Human Rights said met the criteria for torture.
There is no forgiving or forgetting the heartbreak he caused.
