This Is Why We Must Defeat The Republican Party Decisively

It looks like devastating hurricanes like Helene are our new normal. We have to prepare for them by taking actions that bolster resiliency, and we have to stop using fossil fuels.

Republicans, with the encouragement of Donald Trump, have been destroying the government’s power to respond, by inciting the electorate and by actively destroying governmental capabilities. The pathetic continuing resolution that just passed is an example. Three months, and we have to do it again. And that’s not even for a real budget, but rather something that says to the agencies “Do what you can with something sorta based on what you spent last year [also under multiple CRs – ed.] and whatever you can mess with to keep the agency going.”

But we need the agencies. That great visual above, of the day breaking over Helene, comes from NOAA, one of the agencies that Project 2025 explicitly wants to destroy. You can see Helene evolving in almost real time here.

The culture wars, the mean-girl fights, the lies, all the things the Republicans would rather do than govern, steal our ability to deal with things like global warming, whether it’s preventing or preparing. And when they aren’t wasting time, they are actively legislating to hurt people, whether it’s women’s health or voter suppression.

We’ve got to send them to the ash heap of history.
