The White Sox Barrel Towards History

Unlike the 2003 Detroit Tigers, the last team to seriously threaten breaking the modern MLB record for losses in a season, the White Sox have not risen to the occasion. They are now 33-115. With fourteen games left in the season, this means that (unless God mercifully determines to burn down [and I am not making this up] Guaranteed Rate Field or destroy Los Angeles, San Diego, or Detroit with some manner of natural disaster) the Pale Hose need to go 10-4 in order to avoid tying the 1962 Mets for futility. Anything 8-6 or less (and I don’t believe that the White Sox have won eight out of any 14 games during this season) would make history. Here’s what they have left:

  • 2 games at home against Oakland, a very bad team that’s contending with its own version of historic futility.
  • 3 games at the LA Angels, another very bad team.
  • 3 games at San Diego, a pretty good team that will want to win in order to preserve its playoff spot
  • 3 games at home against the aforementioned Angels
  • 3 games at Detroit, a pretty good team that could still be in the hunt for a playoff spot, and moreover a divisional rival likely disinclined to cut the White Sox a break.

The White Sox have a path here! It’s not impossible! It is, however, unlikely. Even if they swept the As and the Angels they’d need to win at least one on the road against a quality, highly motivated team in order to avoid history. That said the 2003 Tigers won five of their last six on the heels of losing 16 of 17 to arrive at their august 43-119 record, so anything is possible.

Here’s my question; from the point of view of a White Sox fans (and such humans do exist) would you rather set the record at home or on the road?
