College Football Week 4 (Not Open) Thread
Your weekly thread, keep it to sports.
Hey, Oregon actually looked awesome against Oregon State! And Washington lost to Washington State. Ha! And then there’s Florida State……Can Mike Norvell go from 12-0 to 0-12 in one season?
Here are the top 10 games this week based on the Athletic’s rankings of teams from 1-134, in order of starting time.
- #24 Illinois at #20 Nebraska, 8, Friday, FOX–After defeating Colorado, the HUSKERS ARE BACK train is rolling hard. Why? Colorado is terrible. I need to see something a lot more real from Nebraska before getting on that derailment anytime soon. I really don’t know if Illinois is that good, but I do know that the loser of this game has no claims to such a description. (Sat update: Ha! Endless Nebraska failure!)
- #40 North Carolina State at #18 Clemson, 12, ABC–Well, NC St doesn’t have a QB anymore and Dabo refuses to admit the 2020s exist and use the transfer portal. Someone has to win. Maybe someone outside of the Carolinas will care. Probably not.
- #12 USC at #23 Michigan, 3:30, CBS–Here’s the problem with this game. Michigan is not good. They even did the ol’ let’s change QBs before week 3 move. That hardly ever ends well. USC in a rout, even in Ann Arbor.
- #33 Georgia Tech at #35 Louisville, 3:30, ESPN2–In the AP poll, Louisville is ranked #19. Why? Who can know. Meanwhile, I am not sure Georgia Tech beating Florida State means anything at all. Meh game in a meh ACC. But hey, somehow the #5 game of the week!
- #57 Arkansas at #47 Auburn, 3:30, ESPN–Mid-level SEC teams face off. Auburn lost at home to Cal and yet is favored. Loser may well not go to a bowl game.
- #11 Utah at #17 Oklahoma State, 4, FOX–The Big 12 sucks it seems and this might be the game of the year, somehow. It doesn’t seem that any of the other teams in this conference can really step it up and play with the big boys. Maybe Kansas State. Utah QB Cam Rising is awesome, but hurt all the time. He is evidently playing. This might not be a marquee matchup in the sense of national fanbases, but in terms of quality football, it ought to be a good one.
- #43 Vanderbilt at #9 Missouri, 4:15, SEC–The “Vanderbilt might be OK” hype ended very quickly with a loss to Georgia State, who might be the best team in the Sun Belt at least. But at Missouri, Tigers in a rout.
- #5 Tennessee and #16 Oklahoma, 7:30, ABC–Well, this ought to be a fun one. The question I think is whether the Sooners are actually good. They wanted the SEC, well here you go. Have at it. The thing is, all the games between big powers means someone has to lose them. I suspect both of these teams might be slightly overrated, but does Oklahoma being probably worse than Tennessee matter in Norman? Definitely watchable!
- #54 Michigan State at #19 Boston College, 8, ACC–Michigan State hasn’t beaten anyone, unless you count Maryland as someone, but they were so bad last year and Jonathan Smith is a hell of a coach and at least they seem to be watchable. Boston College has a resume that is beating Florida State, though they gave Missouri a game. I go for Sparty in the upset.
- #15 Kansas State at #59 BYU, 10:30, ESPN. Pac 12 after Dark may be dead, but what about Big 12 after Dark? I don’t believe in BYU, but this has upset city written all over it.
Meanwhile, maybe Florida State can beat Cal….Probably not though!
