College Football Week One Open Thread

I am going to try and put up open threads each week, sometimes on Saturday but sometimes perhaps earlier, based on the top 10 matchups of the week. I am basing these on the rankings of all FBS teams on The Athletic, which go 1-134. These will probably get chattier as the weeks go on and I see more of the teams play.

  1. #16 Clemson vs #2 Georgia in Atlanta. I actually suspect Georgia is a bit overrated and I do not think Carson Beck is the Second Coming of Peyton Manning. But Team Calhoun Pitchfork Ben Dabo is clearly on the decline and I hope Georgia stomps them like Sherman did in Atlanta in 1864.
  2. #7 Notre Dame at #23 Texas A&M. The Aggies are usually pretty overrated, but then so are the Irish. You can usually count on the Aggies failing, but then that will probably be against some Conference USA team after they beat Notre Dame. Fun fact, Marshall has beaten each of them in the last two seasons!
  3. #33 USC vs #13 LSU in Vegas. Why does the AP have USC at #20? Their defense has been trash for the last two seasons and now Caleb Williams is gone. I’m sorry, LSU is going to stomp them.
  4. #8 Penn State at #27 West Virginia. This could be interesting. While Penn State is usually good, they also usually struggle to beat good teams. West Virginia may not really be that good of a team but this is a huge game for them in Morgantown. Could be an upset possibility.
  5. #17 Miami at #35 Florida. Here’s two teams with coaches on seats getting warm. It’s especially toasty in Gainesville and Miami should win. But Cristobal is a chud and Oregon is very lucky to be rid of him. He can’t really win anywhere and instead just thinks that running the ball into the line every play is Big Boy Football, even though doing this at the end of games when he could just down the ball has cost him TWO wins!
  6. #43 Fresno State at #8 Michigan. The Wolverines lost a lot and the Bulldogs are a good team but I really can’t seem them losing this game. However, it is worth keeping an eye on.
  7. #46 North Carolina at #61 Minnesota. I caught a bit of this on Thursday night. To say the least, I don’t think either of teams is going to the playoffs. UNC won because Minnesota’s supposedly good kicker totally failed twice. “Compelling” if you are wondering who might sneak into the Liberty Bowl.
  8. #62 Boston College at #9 Florida State. Yeah….not sure FSU is staying at 9 after looking like shit while losing to Georgia Tech for God’s sake in Dublin. I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if BC goes into Tallahassee and ends FSU’s playoff bid right now. I don’t think it will happen really since the Golden Eagles are not good, but hey, FSU has already shown they suck.
  9. #64 Miami Ohio at #60 Northwestern. You know, you’d think college football would care enough about its opening weekend that this would not be a top 10 matchup for the week. But no, it does not.
  10. #55 UNLV at #85 Houston. You’d have to be a sicko or a fan of one of these teams to watch this.

Me, I will be in person at Idaho-Oregon. Do I hope for a good game? I do not! I hope to see Oregon win by 100. Because these bad games exist due to the fact that people like me will still watch them if they are our team.
