Surrender is apparently an option

I don’t know if the current Biden administration line about how we all need to lower the national temperature by not engaging in overheated rhetoric constitutes smart politics — and the administration is pretty much guessing about this itself — but substantively it’s a ridiculous and deeply misleading message.

ONE party has radicalized American politics, with increasingly violent rhetoric that demonizes opponents as treasonous America-haters and blood-contaminating invaders, and it’s not the Democrats. ONE party is completely controlled by a cult of personality, embodied in a Leader who literally tried to overthrow the lawful government of the United States. ONE party is in favor of letting mentally unstable boys who aren’t old enough to legally drink or rent a car have unlimited access to weapons whose only purpose is slaughtering lots of people as quickly as possible. ONE party is responsible for where we are now.

There’s a very weird dynamic among many top Democrats right now, who believe Biden is very likely to lose to Trump. Many of these people also believe that another candidate, probably Harris, would have a much better chance of winning, and they all purportedly believe that Trump winning would be a national catastrophe of almost indescribable proportions. Yet many of these same people seem absolutely resigned and fatalistic about the status quo.

This criticism doesn’t extend to Democrats and other non-fascists who believe Biden still represents the best chance to defeat Trump, of course. But there’s a huge swath of Democrats who don’t believe this — who believe quite the opposite — and yet seem resigned to what they’re coming to think of as Trump’s practically inevitable victory.

It’s all very bizarre and disturbing.
