One very unfair criticism that Republicans get is that they’re opposed to attempts to look beyond the most traditional definitions of “merit” when considering people for important jobs. But when you compare the GOP’s record to that of the Democrats, which party has the most genuine commitment to DEI principles?

If you look at Democratic candidates for top political jobs in recent times, all of them have had almost obnoxiously overqualified, as such things have been measured traditionally. Do we see any willingness to look beyond the superficially gold-plated resume? The answer is, absolutely not.

On the other hand, in just the past few years the Republican party has featured:

A three-time presidential nominee who has never held any other elective office, and whose primary qualification for the job was that he was the host of a long-running reality TV show. That, comrades, is real diversity!

And it hardly ends with the presidency. Republicans have also nominated:

A TV personality for governor of Arizona.

A celebrity TV doctor for senator in Pennsylvania.

An ex-football coach for senator in Alabama

An ex-football player for Senator from Georgia.

A memoir writer for Senator from Ohio, and now for vice president.

To be clear, none of these people had anything else on their CVs (that’s fancy academic talk for why the fuck are you qualified for this job exactly anyway?) that remotely qualified them for high public office, beyond the celebrity status bestowed on them by their memorable television appearances, either on chat shows, at book signings, or on the gridiron, where one’s man’s triumph is another’s disaster.

So GOP attacks on Kamala Harris as being “the DEI candidate” are wildly misplaced. No political party anywhere in the developed world, or in the United States, has embraced the spirit of diversity in anything like the way the GOP has.

If anyone has been willing to look past traditional qualifications, or indeed any qualifications whatsoever, for really important jobs, it has been the contemporary Republican party.
