The past is not another country
Powerful stuff here from Reggie Jackson, in the pregame broadcast before tonight’s game at Rickwood Field, the Negro League ballpark in Birmingham, Alabama, where Willie Mays among many other greats started his professional career (I believe it’s the oldest still operating professional baseball park in the US. Video features extremely racist language):
Reggie Jackson played in Birmingham in 1967. Both current major party presidential candidates were in their 20s at the time.
Keep in mind that, at the time, the entire conservative movement was united in its opposition to federal efforts to make the kind of behavior Jackson is talking about illegal, and that today’s conservatives would repeal the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act, the Fair Housing Act etc. if they thought it was possible to do so. For the time being, they’re relying on their judges to gut those laws even though they remain on the books.
Also I never thought I would hear a story about Charlie Finley that would fill me with admiration, but it just goes to show that everyone has some redeeming characteristic. Except Donald Trump and his minions that is.
