Sunday Morning Dithering

I’ve been at the AP Reading for the last two weeks, and a couple of us have been maintaining the last shreds of our sanity by thinking about this:

Given how terrified Gandalf was of even touching it let alone wearing it. I know Samwise resisted the temptation of the ring as well. Just wondering if there’s any other characters in fiction that would be able to resist as well?

I find the Bugs Bunny argument convincing. Other candidates:

• Spock
• Vision (android, so maybe cheating?)
• Data (same problem as Vision)
• Whitney Ellsworth
• Neville Longbottom
• Ray Liptrapp
• Silent Bob
• Laura Roslin
• Gromit
• Andy Taylor (although perhaps too similar to Aragorn)
• Pam Beesly
• Ahsoka Tano
• Theodore Calvin (helicopter makes delivery to Mount Doom no problem)
• George Smiley (bankshot!)
• Arthur Hoggett

One proposed candidate that I’ve seen a few times is Superman, and I find that utterly terrifying, but Kal-El is about two degrees off being a planetary super-tyrant on his best day, and the One Ring would eat him for breakfast. Same for Batman, although I could entertain a Wonder Woman argument. The best candidate is someone who genuinely doesn’t want power, as being afraid of power is different and something that the Ring would rapidly take advantage of. The candidate also has to be driven by a powerful sense of duty. I do think that being able to resist the temptation of the Ring is different than being a good candidate to deliver it to Mount Doom; obviously Tom Bombadil is the former and not the latter, with The Dude, Jason Mendoza, and Phoebe Buffay probably in the same category.

Of the LGM frontpagers DJW is the obvious choice. I am a terrible candidate but I’d have to say the idea of Loomis in possession of the One Ring is absolutely horrifying; think of poor Maddie and Connor!
