Again, Hunter Biden was prosecuted for a crime that is basically never charged as a stand-alone offense, since the crime of lying on a federal form about being a drug addict when buying a gun is a technical offense in the worst sense of the word. Furthermore, it’s an offense that results in a plea bargain almost 100% of the time in the rare instances when it is charged as part of some broader prosecution, but the Trumpist judge running the case decided that she wasn’t going to allow that to happen here.
So this really is a political prosecution of the sort to which Donald Trump claims he’s being subjected. (You may not have noticed but when it comes to the American right wing, every accusation is a confession).
The savagery of America’s penal statutes are reflected in the fact that, in theory, Hunter Biden could be sentenced to 25 years in prison for lying on a federal form about being a drug addict while buying a gun (A gun he possessed for eleven days, and never used).
Meanwhile, somewhere Merrick Garland is reflecting once again on his unshakeable integritude, and the majesty of of our legal institutions.
