This (gift link) is a long sad essay by David French about getting “cancelled” by his old church.
French and his wife adopted a two-year-old Ethiopian girl in 2010, and in 2015 they started to find out that:
(a) Donald Trump’s core support was made up in large part by white evangelicals, i.e., people like him and his wife.
(b) A lot of white evangelicals are Christian nationalists.
(c) Christian nationalists are extremely racist.
There’s a pretty straightforward logical syllogism that can be worked out here without too much difficulty, at least if you’re not overly invested in denying the nature of political reality in the United States in the 21st century.
I mean I feel bad for the guy, because he’s definitively rejected Trumpism (kill that calf and call the family round), but this is case 10,000,000 of I didn’t notice any of this until it happened to me personally.
But better late than never.
