I had planned to write today on Heather Cox Richardson’s three recent columns discussing implications of the Dodd decision and the death of Roe v. Wade (June 24, June 25, June 26). I recommend today’s as a corrective to the panic that too many Democrats are giving themselves over to.

Yes, Joe Biden’s performance last night left openings for all the propaganda A.G. Sulzberger has been pushing in his petulant desire to be able to say he interviewed The President. Surprisingly, aside from the fact that everything Donald Trump said was a lie and that he became more incoherent as the debate wore on, he managed a veneer of what some people think a president should look like.

His bronzer was not so dark, and somehow they kept it from shining like the oily mess it has been. He was loud and attacking. He was white, and a man. The loud and attacking is manly.

Yes, median voter blah blah blah. I don’t know what the median voter thinks, and neither do you, but I do know that sexism and racism have been a (usually disguised) part of the discussion of Biden’s competency and electability, on all sides.

Biden has a competent and attractive Vice President, Kamala Harris. When she isn’t being ignored, the objections to her echo the objections to Hillary Clinton’s candidacy for the presidency. Just not this woman. And this time, a woman of color.

We’ve been through the argument about Johnny Unbeatable before, and I won’t go through all the reasons that that will throw the election to Donald Trump. But I don’t see any scenario in which it won’t. It’s significant that the mock name is of a man, and I’ll bet that he’s white in most mental pictures. And he doesn’t exist, even if you extend the definition to Gretchen Whitmer. She’s great, but she won’t win against Trump at this late date.

So let’s turn the shouting to Trump’s lies and the 2025 agenda for authoritarianism, the toadies and other horrors Trump surrounds himself with, and talk about the good things we can do with a Democratic Congress and President. Now.
