Trump trial ends

Donald Trump’s lawyers basically didn’t put on a defense, and rested their case after calling just two witnesses, neither of which was Trump himself.

Judge Merchan will give the jury its instructions a week from today, after closing arguments. If Trump is convicted, it’s highly unlikely that he’ll go to prison, as that would be an unusual disposition for a first-time offender convicted of a non-violent low-level felony.

I do continue to believe that a guilty verdict would be very bad for him politically, as it’s the kind of thing that will penetrate the otherwise invincible ignorance surrounding voters who know as much about politics as I know about Ariana Grande.

As for the odds of a guilty verdict, having followed the case somewhat closely, and in the wake of the absence of even an attempt at a defense, I think they’re pretty good. But I certainly wouldn’t be surprised by a hung jury, for obvious reasons.

Buckle up.
