We will get fooled again
Robert Hur, as we have discussed, brought his Trump-team-coached testimony to Congress today:
JFC.
The cherry-on-top is Hur refusing to admit, "I said that." Instead the weasely "Those words do appear." https://t.co/HcMbCvj6hr— James Fallows (@JamesFallows) March 12, 2024
Swalwell put together his own supercut of Trump shorting out time after time after time — and it's perhaps even more brutal than Nadler's pic.twitter.com/nIzeZnf8aQ— Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) March 12, 2024
Schiff schools Hur: "You were not born yesterday. You understood exactly what you were doing. It was a choice. You certainly didn't have to include that language." pic.twitter.com/AKOv0BcD5u— Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) March 12, 2024
It’s worth noting here, however, that while Hur was plainly trying to spin a decision not to charge Biden in a pro-Trump political direction, this spin was blatantly obvious, and his assertions could have been treated with skepticism, particularly until reporters had a chance to look at the transcripts. Needless to say, that didn’t happen:
The Washington Post ran 33 stories about Biden's mental fitness in the four days following the Hur report, per @JuddLegum.
After reviewing the transcript, the paper concludes that Biden "doesn’t come across as being as absent-minded as Hur has made him out to be." pic.twitter.com/j0K1EHEOwr— Matthew Gertz (@MattGertz) March 12, 2024
Among other things, this should put to bed the idea that media critics are just saying that there is no legitimate concern with Biden’s age, an increasingly irritating strawman. 63 stories in 4 days in the NYT and WaPo alone! Based on the bare assertions of a Federalist Society operative both outlets now concede were misleading and pejorative! At some point when you keep falling for the con you’re just in on it.
