Why do all these Republican Supreme Court justices keep overruling my reproductive rights?
They held a focus group of ostensibly pro-choice voters in Pennsylvania who supported Trump in 2020. You’ve got to remember that these are people of the land. The common clay of the mid-Atlantic. You know… morons.
Despite labeling abortion as a top issue facing women in America, most of the women who participated in the two focus groups said they’d back Trump in a rematch against President Joe Biden, explaining that other issues are more important to their vote.
And critically, the participants largely refused to hold Trump responsible for the end of Roe v. Wade, though he appointed three of the five Supreme Court justices who backed the June 2022 decision.
Sure Trump said he would nominate justices who would vote to overrule Roe v. Wade, and all three of his nominees did, and he’s repeatedly boasted about this fact during his re-election campaign, but I saw Glenn Greenwald tweet somebody who said that if Roe was overruled with Uncle Joe Brandon in the White House it must actually be his fault CHECKMATE LIBS!
And if you didn’t learn your first lesson you can keep making the same mistake:
For many of the women, abortion isn’t a top issue that will decide their vote in the 2024 general election, even among those who vocally criticized the court for overturning those abortion protections. Only three of the 15 women considered Trump at least partially responsible for the court’s decision. And many don’t believe Trump would seek to sign a future federal ban on abortion into law.
“We will too be fooled again!”
Admittedly, when Trump inevitably tries to pass himself off as a moderate on abortion I’m sure a lot of the political press will go along — they’ve had plenty of practice pretending that Republican elites are secretly pro-choice.
