I have stated my contempt for this kind of talk before, but the idea that contemporary liberals are “exhausted” by Trump and the need to continue fighting him is kind of hard for me to wrap my head around. I mean, what have most people done other than come out to vote and maybe show up for a protest or two. Those are important things, of course, but when we are talking political exhaustion, I think of Bob Moses and SNCC or something like that. Now there’s someone who deserved to be exhausted and leave politics for as long as he wanted. But most modern liberals’ exhaustion basically comes from a combination of doomscrolling, watching cable news (which is a plague upon modern life, including liberal cable news), and just wanting to forget about politics entirely. I get the last part, sure. But the idea that what the vast majority of “the resistance” (speaking of overrated contemporary terminology and that includes the leftist variant of it) has done anything to be exhausted about is something I really struggle with. Like, what have you done to be so exhausted that you really don’t want to have to take on Trump again?
