This is a good opening bid…

After 14 seasons, 10 playoff appearances and the franchise’s lone Super Bowl championship, Pete Carroll is out as the Seattle Seahawks‘ coach.

Team owner Jody Allen said in a statement Wednesday that the decision was made “after thoughtful meetings and careful consideration for the best interest of the franchise.” Carroll will remain with the team in an unspecified advisory role.

… but I’ll see your Pete Carroll and raise you the Great Saban:

Nick Saban, considered among the greatest college football coaches of all time who won six national times at Alabama, is retiring, sources told ESPN’s Chris Low on Wednesday.

Saban, 72, just completed his 17th season at Alabama, which ended in a loss to eventual national champion Michigan in the Rose Bowl.

“I’ve always said that if you’re thinking about retirement, you’re probably already retired, and I’m not there yet,” Saban told ESPN in November.

Lotta nervous folks in Eugene right now checking on Dan Lanning. WRT Saban, I’m glad that I was able to catch a glimpse of him at the tailgate for this season’s Alabama-Kentucky game; the gasps of awe from onlookers at the very sight of the man indicated his importance to the sport.
