NFL late slate open thread: I’m a loser baby so why don’t you fire me
Arthur Smith may not be the worst offensive coach in the NFL, but he’s certainly the most irritating, constantly trying to draw attention to his own purported cleverness rather than figuring out how to use the multiple recent Heisman candidates at his disposal. (The ultimate Smith game was the 9-7 loss to the worst team in the NFL, in which the healthy running back he took with the #8 overall pick got 7 carries so that Tyler Allgeier could run 15 times at 3.2 yards a carry. As it happens, 7 was also the total number of targets for Drake London and Kyle Pitts combined. The guy is a wanker of the first order.)
I would have canned his ass no matter what — the Falcons were 26th in offensive DVOA coming into the game — but this would settle the question for me:

“I gave up, so you also have to!” Yeah, fuck that. You just gave up 48 points to Derek Carr and parlayed a lot of highly coveted offensive talent into a third-place finish in by far the league’s worst division. Worry about your own team rather than the other coach running standard-issue goal line plays at the end of the game. Or, better yet, focus on finding another job.
