The alarming case of the woman who considered her options, made a decision and … acted on it!!!
Please stay on topic in the comments. If you aren’t certain of the topic, read the post before you squirt out your hot news about dead actors, baseball or whatever the fuck. Merci.
Kate Cox, the woman who is currently fighting Texas’ attack on women’s freedom, is a hero. Not because she knows she’s going to win her fight. She can’t know that. She’s a hero because she doesn’t know what will happen and she’s fighting anyway. Just like Norma McCorvey, another Texan who fought Texas’ attack on women’s freedom. (You can read a little bit about McCorvey here if you think you don’t know who she is.)
Naturally, Cox’s act of resolve and bravery is blowing some liberal duds’ minds right out of their asses. Revelation of the parsecs by which they’re missing the fucking point has ensued.
It is not hilarious.
This double-headed display of doltery, featuring Brian Beutler and Atrios is a great example. I learned about it because at least two people have shared it in the comments and several more thought it or something similar sounded like a fine idea.
Beutler (on Xitter):
Joe Biden travel to Texas on Air Force One, collect this poor woman, and fly her to a free state to receive a safe abortion challenge.
Lydon B. Johnson travel to Texas on Air Force One, collect this poor woman, and fly her to a free state to receive a safe abortion challenge.
Dwight Eisenhower travel to Kansas, collect this poor child, and fly her to a state where she can attend school with white children challenge.
Dickhead.
I have a challenge: Assume Cox knows she could have gone to another state but decided to fight the Republican scum in Texas, and don’t talk about women like they’re packages. If that’s too difficult, explore the wonders of shutting the fuck up.
Atrios (agreeing on his blog):
Serves two purposes: makes press about what is happening to women in this country, something I think only people who pay attention are really getting news about, and makes clear who is on which side.
How does that work? How will people who don’t follow outlets that have been covering the case, like CNN, NBC, CBS and USA Today learn about the case because Biden swoops in on Air Force One and rescues one damsel in distress?
One damsel who a lot of liberal duds think is unaware that she could have gone to another state. Maybe they think she doesn’t know other states exist. Really, the barely concealed skepticism regarding Cox’s decision-making abilities would be insulting if it was directed at any person over the age of 12, and Cox is 31 years old.
By the way, I hope that some readers have noticed at least one crucial factor that neither man has mentioned.
I know we all think it’s absurd that “everybody” doesn’t know which party is team abortion and which party is team pregnant women dying, but they actually don’t. And Biden, while as president has been decent on this, doesn’t have a full record of being good.
It is more than absurd that guys are opining about what another guy should do to Cox without regard to what she might want.
So far as Biden showing which side he is on, there are a million and one ways he has and can continue to work on having “a full record of being good” without a tacky publicity stunt that involves playing Pass the Pregnant Parcel with Cox. (Or Jane Doe in Kentucky. Or any of the other people who will file similar cases.)
Especially since it might be a tacky publicity stunt that Cox Does Not Want.
Once again people who know better are ignoring people’s right to live as they see fit right in the middle of a pitched battle over people’s right to live as they see fit. That right includes the right to take enormous risks. To stand up for a principle you believe in. Or just plant your feet and refuse to budge when some fashy thug tells you to move.
However, when people who assert that right don’t fit the traditional hero template, people who are a closer fit flash their biases and bigotries. It is as predictable as the sunrise. Has the state launched an open attack on the rights of a marginalized group? Then some liberals and progressives will agree with the state.
A state strips girls and women of the right of self-determination. Therefore “this poor woman” cannot possibly attempt to control her fate in any way. Time for the Brotherhood of Know Alls, Chin Strokers and Shirt Tuckers to decide what she should do.
A state declares that anyone who is not cishet is a dangerous deviant who has no place in society. Therefore, y’all need to relocate to state controlled by Democrats. And hope it stays that way. Black people and people of color; haven’t you figured out that they don’t want you anywhere south of the Mason-Dixon line? Get moving.
I suppose people who fit both categories should have disappeared in a puff of illogic.
Curiously, I haven’t seen a Just Move order for all women living in forced-pregnancy states. Yet. Maybe that will come later, when the Brotherhood gets bored with this extremely difficult period in history that is not going to wrap up neatly in Act III. Or maybe the people who tend to issue that demand will keep schtum this time. For some of them it would mean they have to move, or separate from a partner or spouse. Great personal inconvenience for thee, not moi.
And another thing? Similar to the Just Move solution, the people who think Operation Pregnant Parcel sounds like a grand idea don’t appear to have any interest in details. Is Cox the only person Biden will rescue, or should he keep AF1 warmed up and ready to go 24/7? And how many seconds would elapse before the same Biden to the Rescue chumps criticize Biden for wasting time and resources?
The answers, by the way, are Huh? and 3 seconds.
At any rate, Atrios ends the post with a parenthetical acknowledging that Cox’s opinion is relevant.
(I don’t know if this woman would like that kind of publicity. That too is an issue, of course).
Thank you so much, yer bleedin’ ‘ighness.
A final thought: Several people expressed concern about Kate Cox’s legal team. I assume they’ll be relieved to learn the Center for Reproductive Rights is representing her. Read here for ways you can help.
