“Almost to a one, the real greats always build a universe that’s bigger than their personal concerns.” A Discussion About Story Songs with Singer-Songwriter, Drive-By Trucker and All-Around Stalwart Patterson Hood
ICYMI! To celebrate the recent Paranoid Style single “Print the Legend,” I talked “story songs” with one of the kings of the genre: Patterson Hood from the Drive-By Truckers! We discuss Tom T. Hall, Townes Van Zandt and our own tunes! Check it out at the Southwest Review if that sounds like your ball of yarn:
I got a hold of this tape of Tom T. Hall, and we would listen to it in the van on tour, just over and over and over. Mike Cooley and I both got obsessed with it. I think Hall might be the greatest story-songwriter of all. He gives you the details and he leaves a lot out.
Also, The Paranoid Style will be sharing a bill with the Drive-By Truckers at DBT’s annual HeAthens Homecoming in Athens, GA at the 40 Watt Club on February 16, 2024. I don’t know about you, but that seems like the sort of show LG&M readers would groove to. Get your tickets here before they get sold out and say you were a witness to history.
