A Short Note About Immigrants

A great many immigrants from Central America and Mexico live in Santa Fe.

I’ve had to have some work done on the house recently. Many of the workers are native New Mexicans and many are recent immigrants. If I wanted to label each of them, the easiest way to do it would be their ability to speak English. Many of the immigrants are rapidly learning English, and some of the native New Mexicans have accents, so accents are not indicative.

The work has been done quickly and efficiently, and the workers are pleasant to be around.

They remind me of my family. My grandfather, who came from Germany, started out with a small restaurant in Jersey City. My father worked for a number of corporations and then built his own business. We have quite a variety of restaurants in Santa Fe, many hole in the wall types like my grandfather’s. The supervisors I’ve been dealing with in the building work are as pleased as my father was with his business.

Anecdotal, yes. But it is very hard for me to see how we should do anything but welcome people like this and give them help if they need it.
