The Josh McDaniels Experience

Mark Davis had a rare moment of sanity:

Replacing Gruden with Josh McDaniels in 2022 was another step backward. McDaniels is not a clever game-planner or play-caller; his Raiders often looked like a Super Bowl XV reenactment troupe, all I-formations and fourth-and-short punts. He and general manager Dave Zeigler were clueless roster builders, replacing Derek Carr with Jimmy Garoppolo (signed to what is essentially a two-year contract despite a pre-existing injury) in an pricey downgrade while larding the bottom of the roster with New England Patriots castoffs.

McDaniels isn’t even an effective Machievellian backroom schemer. He only lasted one-and-three-quarters seasons mismanaging the Denver Broncos before the villagers ran him out of town with pitchforks and torches in 2010. His Raiders tenure, which officially ended when the team fired McDaniels and Zeigler in the wee hours of November 1, has been rolling toward its conclusion since the Raiders blew a series of double-digit leads in the middle of the 2022 season.

Unless Mike Lombardi gets another GM job, McDaniels has presumably finished his career as a head coach, which involved many, many offseasons of media hype. Taking over teams that were 8-8 and 10-7, his record was 20-33. His record as a coach or coordinator not working for Bill Belichick is 22-47. His first QB move was trading up to draft multi-sport non-prospect Tim Tebow*; his second, as noted above, was massively overpaying an injured crony. The QBs he inhereted have generally gotten worse too. You can read the whole hilariously grim history here.

*as noted in comments, his first move was actually replacing Jay Cutler with Kyle Orton, which might have worked out OK if he had any idea how to evaluate prospects.

Congratulations for fans of the New England Patriots on finding their next defensive coordinator!

…as Paul observes, the good news for Raiders fans is that Brian Ferentz should be available this offseason.
