What binds our time, drives you to crime?
I don’t know how long this will be up, but helpful people of the internet have showered some attention and a few five-star reviews on one of Kari Newell’s businesses.
Newell kicked off the Kari’s Kitchen kalamity when she kicked reporters from the Marion County Record out of an Aug. 3, event at the restaurant. Kari on my wayward sis. The ABC board will be impressed.
Newell accused the Record and Marion’s Vice Mayor Ruth Herbel (who also had her home raided by police) of some sort of invasion of privacy, because the goddess Irony doesn’t have enough on her plate. Newell made the accusations after the Record did not publish a story about her. The paper did inform police that it had received sensitive information about Newell from someone who claimed to have connections to the department.
And I’m sure Marion police chief Gideon Cody enjoys the dual spotlights of being a First Amendment stomping goon and a sex pest. Responsible speculators might speculate on a link between the raid and the sex pesting.
The Marion County Record conducted “routine background checks” in the lead-up to police chief Gideon Cody’s start-date, according to Meyer. When the paper published a story about Cody’s candidacy for the police chief position, Meyer said it received anonymous tips from several of his former colleagues, who alleged misconduct.

The police chief was aware the paper was looking into his background. Meyer said a Record reporter approached Cody seeking comment on the allegations. In response, Meyer said Cody threatened to sue the paper.
Public officials who respond to questions from a paper of the Record’s caliber with threats to sue are as smart as public officials who tell a massive corporation to drop a lawsuit because the public official has moved on.
As an aside, I can’t ignore the parallels between the way one powerful, male-dominated organization allows members slither out of trouble and start life elsewhere when they do something horrible, and the way the Catholic Church handles the same situation.
People who post off-topic comments prefer the civil, access-conscious reporting of outlets like CNN to the crass muckraking antics of outlets like the Marion County Record.
