The Desperation of Republican Elites
I enjoyed this piece on the desperation of Republican elites for a Magic Candidate like Youngkin or Kemp (how magical!!) to drop from the sky and win the nomination because they continue to have not grasped that GOP voters care absolutely nothing about them and their money does them no good. Axios is a bad publication with a bad style of bullet pointing everything so I am not going to excerpt any of it. You can read it if you want. But what has happened in the Republican Party is that the rich thought they could gin up enough hate and anger toward “elites” or whatever that they could motivate voters but they would remain in control of the party. That worked pretty well through the Bush years and even in 2008 and 2012 as far as the presidential candidates went. But it was bound to fail eventually. Obviously if you keep telling the base they are all that matters and that “real conservative values” must be preserved, but all you really care about is that upper class tax cut, then eventually those voters are going to move past you to people who will preserve the white race and return us to the fictional gender norms of 1957 and whatever else happens to motivate the crazies. This is why that even before Trump, there were these boomlets of interest for total clowns like Ben Carson and Michelle Bachmann and Dead Pizza Mogul. And look, if Trump was to drop dead tomorrow, the most likely candidate for the nomination wouldn’t be Meatball Ron or Christie or Haley or Scott. It would be Vivek Ramaswamy because only he can provide the level of crazy the voters want.
Whether the nation would be in a better place if Republican elites still held some control over their party is a question we can debate, but I for one am not going to feel sorry for these people at all.
