Happy Belated Birthday to War on the Rocks!
I have been remiss in failing to offer timely congratulations to War on the Rocks and its founder Ryan Evans on the 10th anniversary of its creation. War on the Rocks is closer to an online magazine than to a blog, but it is nevertheless part of the same ecosystem of websites that emerged out of the waning days of the Old Blogosphere. It has maintained a coherent culture and consistent feel over what has sometimes been explosive growth. War on the Rocks articles are pitched at a level that engages with a learned policy audience while not leaving laymen too far behind, and have come (along with WOTR’s sister project, Texas National Security Review) to dot my various syllabi. They can also be found on the syllabi of advanced courses at the War Colleges, and I presume at the lower level Professional Military Education (PME) institutions as well. I personally have never published at WOTR, partially because I have other outlets for my writing, and partially because of a long-term, wholly unreasonable feud that I have with Ryan Evans. Nevertheless, WOTR and especially its podcast series have become absolutely critical over the course of the Russia-Ukraine War.
