American Industrial Policy?

This Asia Times piece notes that there’s a lot of industrial building in the United States all of a sudden–both spurred by Biden’s possibilities and (I think at least) some response to the supply chain issues of Covid when it became obvious that relying on a single dictatorship to make everything in the world miiigggghhhht have some downsides. But it also notes that America still lacks any kind of industrial policy. Even basic questions–how industrial do we want the U.S. to be at this point?, what do we think the U.S. should make?–are unanswered. It’s just so haphazard. I suppose I am not overly surprised by this, but still, having an actual industrial policy would be a great improvement so that the nation can properly plan this out. I don’t particularly blame anyone for how things are going here–capitalists are going to build where they want and for what they want without government direction and while Biden has provided a bit of that, it’s hardly overall government policy. But this is undoubtedly something that we want done better than it is being done.
