Can the president move public opinion in his favor by speaking? Unless you’re about to launch a war, almost certainly not. Will Biden supporting certain positions in public make Republicans agreeing to these positions in a deal more likely? The question answers himself.
Democrats have made an error by refusing to eliminate the debt ceiling when they might have had the votes. But given the loaded weapon they’ve chosen to lay around for House Republicans, they’re no magical way to prevent Republicans from taking hostages with it.
